Every heard the phrase “Safety First” in your work travels? I have over & over again. So over used and now relegated to total irrelevance. Oh it’s a nice little catch phrase but does absolutely zero in helping promote safety anymore. Why? People just tune it out just like every other over used catchy ideal from the past. Things like “outside the box” or the ever popular “win, win” line of wishful thinking.
Look I’m sorry if you like the phrase “Safety First” that’s fine. My point is that the phrase itself is not a positive safety culture. It does zero to help promote one and if you rely on it these days to help promote safety at your company you might want to rethink that. In fact you might want to review your entire safety program; provided you even have one, to see where else you might be going wrong.
Here are the top three areas most companies go wrong with company safety training:
- Simply relying on posters, catch phrases and out dated training ideas. Printing up ‘Safety First’ on everything is a waste of time. Why? It’s lost the original meaning and goal. The original goal was to help promote a positive safety culture. However everyone and their uncle jumped all over the phrase watering it down and simple never backed it up. Once your organization does not walk the walk you can forget it. Your ability to create or keep a positive safety culture is muted. Catch phrases without backing it up with investment with employees as so many do mean a total loss in company credibility. Once the credibility on safety matters in your company is gone everything you do from there will be ignored. Bottom line is you must invest in your employees over the long haul or you’re wrong.
- “We’ve always done it this way and have been fine.” Well good for you that you’ve rolled the dice this long and missed the snake eyes. Times have changed and so have the workers. The idea of simply “do some training” has passed. Hey I’m not saying you need to invest hundreds of thousands developing an interactive 3D website for safety training. However if you are still popping in a few old VCR tapes and think that’s okay good luck with that. Bottom line is if your company still does the pencil whip approach the whip can crack both ways. Pencil whipping is and has always been wrong.
- “Oh it will never happen to……” yeah right. Ignoring it will not make it go away. I’m not sure which is worse really. Those that pencil whip or those that pretend it doesn’t pertain to them. Do you run your business on luck? Again I’m not saying you need to go overboard and spend a ton. Most in this category think any spending on safety is a waste of their money. It should be common sense but they’re wrong. Workers in most cases just don’t know what they don’t know. For example how something simple as mixing two cleaning agents could create a toxic gas that kills everyone. Common sense right? Yet willing to bet far too many reading this are wondering exactly which household cleaners I’m talking about. Bottom line sticking your head in the sand on safety at your company is wrong.
Today the information every company manager needs it out there but who has the time to track it all down? Easy answer is someone that already has the information, has compiled it, and has a passion for helping train others. I’m not talking long drawn out boring classroom lectures. Those just don’t work anymore. Think forty hours of hazardous waste danger training and bet your head wants to nod already huh? Think more on the lines of short & direct subject trainings customized to your team and company schedule.
